Michael Carr – Chef Patron, Restaurant 92.
Born and bred Yorkshire boy, Michael Carr launched Restaurant 92 in November 2015 with owner and local entrepreneur Ian Humphreys. Having come from a hardworking family, Michael Carr began his first job at age 14 working both front and back-of-house at his local pub, The Square Compass. While he initially began with the incentive of earning some extra cash, he soon became heavily involved with the food working in the kitchen as a trainee chef. From there, he followed his passion for cooking around the country working in a number of world-renowned kitchens.
Michael Carr’s next role was working as a trainee chef and chef de partie at Rudding Park Hotel in Harrogate before moving to Driftwood Hotel in Cornwall where he worked as chef de partie. Here he gained an insight into fine dining, learning fundamental cooking skills that have contributed to his cooking style today. Whilst working at the hotel he was part of the team to achieve a Michelin star - one of his proudest moments to date. In 2011, he moved down to London, where he worked as The Ramsay Group’s youngest ever company sous chef at Claridge’s, Petrus, MAZE and Restaurant Gordon Ramsay (alongside Clare Smyth). Just over two years later he joined Alyn Williams at The Westbury as junior sous chef but his time in London was cut short due family reasons. Instead, Michael Carr pursued his career up north in Harrogate as head chef at award-winning Van Zeller alongside Chef Patron, Tom Van Zeller before deciding to start a restaurant of his own.
Restaurant 92 opened officially in November 2015 and, since then, has received glowing reviews and become a favourite amongst locals and tourists alike. Michael Carr has put Harrogate on the foodie map, making it into the Michelin Guide and the Good Food Guide as well as achieving Harrogate’s Chef of the Year in 2017.Read more
Michael Carr explains, “My experience working in London gave me the opportunity to work alongside some of the best chefs in the UK – it’s what has pushed me to become the chef that I am today. I am extremely proud of my family and the Restaurant 92 team for our achievement and am very humbled by the situation I am in - I have to remind myself every day that I’m only 26!”
