Here at the BBC Good Food Shows we come across some of the most incredible artisan producers and delicious new ingredients. But it’s when we hear the stories behind the products, the passion behind the flavours and the enthusiasm behind the brands that it really comes to life.
This is where we catch up with friends Tim and Kate, founders of Seaspoon Seaweed. Tim is a self-confessed cycling fanatic always on the lookout for a nutritional boosts and energy fixes. Kate is a cordon bleu chef and family cook with a keen focus on healthy ingredients. The friends were inspired by the fresh flavour of seaweed, balanced with its extreme goodness. After much development, including testing by an accredited laboratory and securing a Crown licence to exclusively harvest seaweed by hand in South Devon, Seaspoon seaweed launched in 2018.
Seaweed is well documented as being one of the most nutrient dense vegetables on the planet, yet it hardly ever makes appearances in our recipes. Jamie Oliver and Heston Blumenthal are vocal advocates of seaweed as a superfood, and when we chatted to Tim about Seaspoon, it was abundantly clear that he and Kate are passionate about making seaweed an integral part of our daily diet, saying “We wanted to make seaweed accessible in easy to use and enticing ways, boosting every day food with vitamins, minerals, protein, omega oils and fibre. We believe in food that is good for you and that, with correct choices, food can be preventative, restoring and fun.”
Seaspoon Boost is the original, a pure seaweed mix (sea lettuce, sea greens, sea spaghetti and dulse) which can be sprinkled on pretty much anything. The range also includes Seaweed Umami Blend, which Tim guarantees will pump up the flavour of any dish, and Seaweed Herb Mix, a supercharged mixed herb blend. Kate has created a fleet of easy recipes for Seaspoon.com to illustrate just how easy it is to incorporate, and reap the benefits of, Seaspoon seaweed.
Here at BBC Good Food Show HQ we’re particularly taken by their fantastically festive Halloumi chips with Seaspoon seaweed and cranberry. Definitely something to add to your Christmas menu! Get the recipe >
Seaspoon have just won a BBC Good Food Show Producers Bursary Award and will be at the BBC Good Food Show Winter 2018, on stand A52. Do pop over to meet Tim and Kate, taste their wares and get some exclusive show discounts too!
