We’re putting the spotlight on one of our 2018 winners of the Producers Bursary Awards, Happy Butter Ghee.
Happy Butter is a small Devon based artisan company making soil association certified organic ghee from UK organic butter. Their ghee is made traditionally in small batches to ensure maximum quality and flavour. We were delighted by the taste of their ghee, so we’re excited to share the story behind the producer who won over our taste buds at this year’s Bursary Awards.
What is ghee? Ghee originates from the Indian Subcontinent, and put simply is a form of clarified butter. The water and milk solids are filtered out, leaving the pure butter oil. This was traditionally used as a way of storing butter without having a fridge.
Creators Rupert and Kate started making ghee for their family as a healthier alternative to oil. Realising they were onto something, they took this to the mass market and were met with an incredible response. In their first year of trading they won 3 stars at Great Taste and champion of dairy at Taste of the West for the flavour and quality of their ghee.
Ghee is rapidly growing in the UK, as it’s seen as a cooking oil which provides health benefits. It offers a healthier way of cooking your favourite foods and it can also be used to replace nut and seed oils for high temperature cooking and in endless recipes.
Happy Butter Ghee is completely organic and only uses butter made in the UK to ensure animal welfare and reduced food miles. Their delicious Golden Ghee which is made with organic turmeric root is a truly unique and innovative product, combining the health benefits of organic grass-fed ghee and turmeric. The two work in perfect synergy to increase the bio-availability of the curcumin. This cooking oil helps create 'medicine on a plate' meals which is on trend with experts like Dr Rupy Aujla from The Doctors Kitchen and Jasmine Hemsley.
As the winter rolls in and nights get colder, it’s all about the warming dishes to nourish the taste buds. One of our winter favourites has to be roast potatoes cooked in ghee butter, click here for the recipe.
See them at the BBC Good Food Show Winter, check out their amazing ghee and congratulate them on their Bursary Award!
