Meet the Shire Horses at Hampton Court Palace...

The relationship between the Shire horse and Hampton Court Palace dates to the time of Henry VIII.  Some 500 years ago, the King started the process of developing the ultimate warhorse and is credited with giving the resulting large and powerful breed of horses the name Shire – from the Saxon word schyran. This means to shear or divide, explaining why ‘shire’ is synonymous with ‘county.’ This breeding programme persisted until the 19th century until the advent of the internal combustion engine signalled their demise, and post-WWII, they were all but redundant and virtually died out. Today, Shire horses are designated at risk by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust.  In London, where once there were thousands, only one working herd remains, at Hampton Court Palace.

Come and meet these rare gentle giants during your visit, and find out more about them from their handlers.

Circus Sensible

Have a go at a whole range of circus skills with Circus Sensible's drop-in skills school. Running throughout the day, these informal sessions lets kids try their hand at a range of skills, such as juggling with scarves, balls and clubs, plate spinning, diabolo, and poi.  Circus Sensible will be on hand to help too, by teaching, encouraging and of course entertaining the children as they learn fun new tricks.  Find them in the palace grounds either side of their performances, and watch out for their roaming performers all around the event too.
